I’m so happy to report back from the Gluten-Free Foodie Tour (#gffoodietour) that I went to last night. Why am I happy? Because I could finally go to a party and not have to ask a million times “is this gluten free?” and almost everyone else that was there had gluten issues too! To not have to worry about what I was shoving in my face was sublime!
We had a great show, 55 people showed up! The executive chef talked about how his kitchen is dealing with cross-contamination, as well as modifying recipes to make them gluten-free (but still incredibly tasty). He understands the needs of the Celiac community and is working on providing tasty and safe food! He made me feel like they honestly cared about me and my dietary needs – how special.
Here are some great food pics from the event!

So the story behind the tour is basically this – an awesome guy (gluten, dairy, and soy-free, to boot) – Ken Scheer – sets up these fantastic gluten-free tours of restaurants that offer gluten-free food. This was my first foodie tour, but there’s been great stuff that I’ve missed out on – like tours of Bombay Spice and Indulge Burgers. Read his post on the method behind his foodie tours to get to know them a little better:
“As of now my goal is to hold one event a month at different locations to help build the momentum. To date, the tours are averaging 4o attendees, reaching 200K followers and 750K impressions. This data is then collected and shared with the restaurant as well as future restaurants so they can see the importance and value of what our gluten-free community brings. As these tours grow so will the numbers and sponsorship opportunities. In the end, I want to take these gluten-free foodie tours nationally but those details will be shared at a later date.”
Seriously, brilliant. I hope that more than just Arizona gets to experience his foodie tours. It does a great service to not only gluten-free communities, but restaurants as well. The more we can work together – the better! We get better service, and they understand our needs better. Hooray!
Not only is Ken awesome, but he also does gluten-free consulting too. Find Ken’s Twitter at @KenScheer and on Facebook at Rock a Healthy Lifestyle. I would strongly suggest to follow him on social media! Also, if you live near a Fleming’s Steak House, go there and eat safely! I enjoyed what I ate, and I’m so happy they have an executive chef that “gets it.”
