12 Days of Celiac Christmas: #6 Jewel’s Cupcake Shop

**UPDATE: JEWEL’S BAKERY AND CAFE has a physical store location now in Phoenix, AZ and serves dedicated gluten-free food items.**

Today is brought to you by Jewel’s Cupcake Shop – a local bakery here in Phoenix, Arizona. It’s run by Julie, a great lady and a frequent Celiac Disease Foundation support group member. You may remember me talking about Jewel’s Cupcake Shop from her launch party a few months ago – just check out this cupcake bouquet from our review of the event.

Here’s a little of Julie’s (of Jewel’s Cupcake Shop) story:

My daughter had had stomach aches for a few years and the doctors had no clue what is was. She was underweight and was eventually hospitalized for severe abdominal pain. The doctors called for the surgeon to remove her appendix. I asked for more tests and it turned out she had swollen lymph nodes around her intestines. We followed up with a naturopath doctor and found out she was sensitive to gluten and wheat. She had tested negative for celiac with the blood test and we just figured it was accurate. With further issues with skin rashes we found out that she did in fact have Celiac. I had always loved to bake and we did not like what we were buying off the shelf. Things were overpriced and had a bad taste or texture. I experimented with different flours and our award winning cupcake recipe was born. From there, I started making all kinds of desserts and the word spread. A year later, our soft, moist bread was born! Now we are starting construction on our own storefront!

I only really knew about Jewel’s Cupcake Shop from her amazing breads, cupcakes, pies and cookies – but she sells her gluten-free flour mixes too! Her mixes include: all-purpose flour, cornbread, pancake, scones, biscuit, chocolate chip cookie, and brownie mixes. They retail for $7 each – what a deal! At the last CDF meeting, she gave me a bag to sample so I could review her flour since I only have had her pre-made products. In order to try out some of Jewel’s mixes, I made some famous Nestle’s Tollhouse cookies. I used the recipe found at Very Best Baking.

These cookies were DE-licious! I definitely liked baking with this flour – and she said that you can just use it as a direct substitute for any flour – no tinkering required! It’s made with oat flour (dedicated field and mill), tapioca, white rice, and potato flour with xanthan gum. Can’t wait to use this mix for other things!

I wanted to also show a little bit of the other great stuff that I’ve had a chance to eat from Jewel’s Cupcake Shop. While I was down for the count with my recent knee surgery, she dropped off an amazing care package before Thanksgiving that made me quite the popular lady. Just look at this spread!

What you see are pumpkin cupcakes, a vegan and gluten-free mini pumpkin pie, a baguette, a loaf of the most amazing pumpkin bread (that went over splendidly with non-GF’ers during the holidays), and the most scrumptious focaccia rolls with mozzarella in the middle! Did I mention how lucky I am to have this lady in Arizona?!?!

You’ve got to add them on Facebook – because every day she posts something awesome and delicious looking! Call her or contact her on her website to order delicious stuff! She does ship items outside Arizona, but – like most places – it’s going to be more pricey to ship pre-made deliciousness that need to be shipped quicker. Definitely get your orders in!

We are lucky to have Jewel’s Cupcake Shop as a shining jewel in the Phoenix gluten-free community. I hope all of you outside of the valley get to try her great products!

LOVE her cupcakes but down in Tucson it’s hard to get any of the products. I haven’t had her flour or cookie mix and would love to make them! They look so yummmyy and being a college student leaves me little time to drive to get it or find a good recipe for cookies.

It will soon be on 40th St and Thomas. Right now she bakes out of her house. She has a Kickstarter going on right now – search “gluten free” and you will find it!
