You’re almost there! You’ve almost made it to the end of May and the end of Celiac Disease Awareness Month! It’s been a LONG month, and we as the celiac community have been through a LOT (namely jokes from the media). You owe it to yourself to take a load off and have a nice, cold, gluten-free beer.
Today is DAY 30, and it’s brought to you by our friends at New Planet Beer. If you’ve been gluten-free for any period of time, you’re probably familiar with New Planet Beer, as it’s widely publicized and widely available to the gluten-free community. It is a sorghum-based beer that is made without gluten-free grains (instead of those beers crafted to remove gluten that have such a negative connotation). Hopefully you’ve seen New Planet at an expo or conference so you can grab some cool New Planet Beer swag too! FYI, if you’re coming to Celiac Disease Foundation’s Conference and Expo in Pasadena, CA next week, you’ll see me AND you’ll get to share a New Planet Beer with me! CHEERS!
New Planet Beer makes SIX varieties of their gluten-free sorghum beer. Here’s the run-down and their own tasting notes to the beer:
PALE:
New Planet Beer’s Pale Ale – Formerly Off Grid Pale Ale – is reminiscent of a classic American Pale Ale, offering bold hop character and rich caramel and grapefruit notes with a clean yet distinctly hoppy finish. **TEAM FAVORITE**
AMBER ALE:
A truly drinkable amber ale with a balanced malt profile, lightly toasted caramel notes and subtle citrus hints on the finish
BLONDE ALE:
Light and refreshing, our Blonde Ale – Formerly known as Tread Lightly Ale – offers bright notes of honey and a subtle floral aroma with a crisp clean finish. **MY FAVORITE**
RASPBERRY ALE:
Formerly known as 3R Raspberry Ale- This delightfully drinkable ale offers a crisp, yet complex, balance of subtle fruit flavor and aroma, with a zesty, citrusy finish. Brewed with natural raspberry puree and orange peel.
BELGIAN ALE:
An ale created with a distinctly Belgian character. Bright, crisp and refreshing with subtle spice and honey notes.
BROWN ALE:
This award-winning ale is rich in character and depth, highlighted by coffee and chocolate flavors, with subtle cinnamon and vanilla notes on the finish.
BELOW YOU’LL FIND AN AWESOME TASTE TEST VIDEO! Yes, two celiacs and one beer fan came together to test FIVE gluten-free beers from New Planet! We’ve ranked our favorite three varieties! CLICK ON THE VIDEO TO LINK TO YOUTUBE!
While my favorite came in second overall, I’m not hating. I mean, it’s gluten-free beer with friends!
On top of just drinking the beer for the taste testing we did, I wanted to bake with it! I have a lot of mixes from Montana Gluten Free so I want to try making beer bread. However, this day, I wanted to make something very sweet. I made beer cupcakes with Kyra’s Bake Shop mixes. Kyra says to substitute out the milk from the recipe and sub with beer instead! Mine definitely tasted like beer – chocolate beer! Since the brown ale is made with cocoa, we went with that to make the chocolate cake mix.
New Planet Beer should be available in most major liquor stores in the US (46 states) and Canada. You can purchase New Planet online at Brewforia.com – but they only ship to certain states due to alcohol laws. Basically if you live in any of these states (AK, AR, DE, HI, KS, KY, ME, MD, MA, MI, MS, MT, NH, OK, PA, RI, SD, TX, UT, VA, WA and WV), you’re SOL and you’re going to have to come hang out with me in Arizona to get some awesome New Planet if you don’t have any at your local grocery store.
But, if you’re really lucky you live in Boulder, CO. According to Daily Camera, New Planet Beer opened a tap and tasting room at its Gunbarrel nanobrewery on May 28th. Located at 6560 Odell Place, Unit D, in Boulder, it features six beers on tap including the brewery’s 100 percent gluten-free beer and experimental brews that are “crafted to remove gluten” barley beers, as is open 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.
