You may be familiar with Daiya as we talk about their vegan gluten-free pizzas all the time. Ever since I went 99% dairy-free, I’ve been using Daiya a lot as a substitute for items like pizzas, on top of spaghetti, etc. I’ve also used their slices as DFGF grilled cheese sandwiches. They also have cream cheese, slices, wedges (now called blocks), and shreds.
Daiya cheese are free of three of the most common allergens:
- Dairy (casein, whey and lactose)
Daiya Foods also have:
- 0 mg of cholesterol per serving
- Trans fat-free
- Free of artificial ingredients and preservatives
- Certified vegan – free of all animal products
- Free of hormones and antibiotics
I love their pizzas – because they are vegan (DFEF) and gluten-free. Although I’m not vegan I do try to avoid eggs and definitely avoid dairy – so I can add proscuitto and pepperoni and all sorts of dead animal on top of my pizzas if I so choose. On top of their plain cheese they also offer other flavors: Margherita, Fire-Roasted Veggies, Mushroom & Roasted Garlic. I’m pretty sure I’ve tried all of them, especially during the off chances that my Whole Foods is having a sale on them. My Whole Foods retails them for around $10 for a whole pizza. In our family, that’s enough for two people, but I can totally take down a whole pizza by myself.
So what about gluten-free and Daiya? Daiya Foods requires gluten-free ingredients practices from their suppliers and commit to a gluten-free environment in their manufacturing practices. The shreds, blocks, slices, and cream cheese style spreads are certified by the Gluten Free Certification program, which is endorsed by the Canadian Celiac Association, and their pizzas are endorsed by the Celiac Sprue Association.
They just launched a new product – their SMOKED GOUDA block (formerly called a wedge). This is supposed to melt just like real gouda! YUMMERS! Daiya put on a huge show at Expo West 2014 and even captured some vegan awards for their new flavor.

I think I’ve had Daiya just once, on a pizza (but I’m not totally sure it was Daiya—some meltable vegan cheese), so I would love the chance to get better “acquainted” with it. 🙂 I’m most curious about the blocks, though of course vegan shreds that actually melt are pretty exciting, too.

Hmm, well I’ve already tried their mozzarella and cheddar shreds. Not sure if there are other varieties of the shredded cheese? Probably the block cheese!

Love Daiya! I eat their pizza when I have an especially hard week as a treat for myself. I went vegan at the beginning of the new year and was thrilled to learn all about Daiya’s wonderful (and delicious!) products that were vegan!

i have been a vegan for over 20 years. when i started there weren’t many good quality, great (or even good) tasting substitutes. daiya is definitely a break through in the cheese substitute market. it’s good stuff, been using it for probably as long as it’s been around. the cheddar is great for grilled cheese sandwiches. our dairy eating friends don’t even know the difference.
Love that they are both vegan and gluten free! Haven’t had a chance to try the pizzas yet, but looking forward to it!

I don’t have celiac disease, but I do have rheumatoid arthritis and I’ve noticed that a vegan & gluten free diet really helps! So far, I’ve only tried Daiya cheeses and I love them!

I’ve had multiple Amy’s products with Daiya and thought the taste was a little different than cheese, but quite a good sub!
