Red Apple Lipstick Gluten Free Mascara

*NOTE: I am an affiliate for Red Apple Lipstick! It’s some of the only makeup I allow on my very sensitive celiac body and I think you’ll love it as much as I do!*

You know that I love Red Apple Lipstick – I write about it all the time. I only wear their eyeshadow and lipstick.

I am an addict. And now I’m addicted to their new GLUTEN FREE MASCARA

Hello, I’m Erica and I’m a Red Apple Lipstick addict.

I’ve raved about their lipstick. I’ve gone gaga over their eyeshadows. But now I have something to really talk about – their mascara. Now, I’ve made it easy to click on any of the photos of me rocking the mascara to buy. Please note that I am an affiliate for Red Apple Lipstick – but it’s also one of my favorite gluten-free brands on the planet (and you know that if you’ve followed me for more than a day). Any time you see me at a conference, show, or expo – I’ll be wearing RAL!

From the second my tester arrived, I threw out any L’Oreal mascara I still had around. I just knew that this RAL would be the real deal – and I could tell from the first time I put it on my eyes. Let’s just see why, okay?

1) RAL Ingredients (I’m calling out what RAL has below that makes it unique and the listing the ingredients)

Ginko Biloba Extract – “A great “Circulation Enhancer” – which helps the collagen in your skin stay full and healthy. It conditions the skin around the root of the eye lash to keep the skin tight. The tightened skin helps your body hold onto that lash, and helps it grow straight.”

Acorus Calamus Root Extract – “This anti-inflammatory is a dream – internal inflammation of the skin is reduced, as this extract conditions the hair and skin. An extract from the roots of the “sweet flag” plant, this super ingredient relieves skin irritations.”

Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17 – “This little guy is a keratin stimulating mamba-jamba. Keratin is the body’s main protein in your hair. The more of Keratin, the stronger, and healthier the hair. This is a naturally occurring amino acid that your body needs in order to grow healthy hair… and your lashes LOVE IT.”

Allantoin – “An amazing rejuvenator – it is an anti-irritant that supports cellular function on a micro level, which promotes healing and regulatory function. This extract from the comfrey plant, soothes and protects skin. Your lash follicle will do a happy dance.”

Ingredients: Water, Acrylate Copolymer, Stearic Acid, Iron Oxides, Carnauba Wax, Glycerin, Synthetic Beeswax, Tromethamine, Polyvinylalcohol, Mica, Silica, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract, Bergamot Leaf Extract, Octapeptide-2, Acorus Calamus Root Extract, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Allantoin, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol ** (NOTE: this mascara is suitable for vegans because it uses synthetic beeswax).

L’Oreal False Fiber Lashes ingredients (per their website – I’ve bolded the ingredients that this mascara has in common with RAL and then left regular what is unique to their formula).

AQUA / WATER / EAU • PARAFFIN • POTASSIUM CETYL PHOSPHATE • ACRYLATES COPOLYMER • CERA ALBA / BEESWAX / CIRE DABEILLE • CERA CARNAUBA / CARNAUBA WAX / CIRE DE CARNAUBA • STEARETH-2 • CETYL ALCOHOL • PHENOXYETHANOLHYDROXYETHYLCELLULOSE • ACACIA SENEGAL / ACACIA SENEGAL GUM • ETHYLENEDIAMINE/STEARYL DIMER DILINOLEATE COPOLYMER • ETHYLENE/VA COPOLYMER • RAYON • METHYLPARABEN • SODIUM DEHYDROACETATE • HYDROGENATED JOJOBA OIL • HYDROGENATED PALM OIL • POLYVINYL ALCOHOL • DISODIUM EDTA • ORYZA SATIVA CERA / RICE BRAN WAX • ETHYLPARABEN • SYNTHETIC WAX • NYLON-6 • 2-OLEAMIDO-1,3-OCTADECANEDIOL • PANTHENOL • SILICA [MAY CONTAIN / PEUT CONTENIR: CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499 / IRON OXIDESMICA • CI 75470 / CARMINE • CI 77288 / CHROMIUM OXIDE GREENS • CI 77289 / CHROMIUM HYDROXIDE GREEN • CI 77007 / ULTRAMARINES • CI 77891 / TITANIUM DIOXIDE • CI 77510 / FERRIC FERROCYANIDE • CI 77266 / BLACK 2

2) RAL is gluten-free, vegan, paraben-free, soy-free, corn-free, SLS-free (that foamy crap in your toothpaste), nut-free, glycol-free and GMO-free and BPA-free. WHEW – that’s a lot of frees! Now what’s not free? Well, the mascara. It retails for $42 – which may cause some of you read this sentence again. But…it’s worth it. This isn’t your typical drug store mascara. So you can’t really compare the cost to something like my L’Oreal. Higher-end mascaras run $30-$50, but rarely offer coupons. If you’re a VIP RAL member, you get a pretty awesome deal every month in your inbox, and you can use that discount on the mascara! If you’re a VIP, you will never pay full price for Red Apple Lipstick!

3) But enough about ingredients – because I know that they will win you over. What about the performance? For those of you that have been following my Instagram know just what type of performance this mascara brings you.

Full lashes. And girl, I like my lashes incredibly full – as fake looking as they can get. I can put on a kazillion coats and still not be satisfied. I can get the lashes I want out of 3-4 coats of this, or a lighter eye in two.

Long lashes.

No spidering.

No flaking.

No smudging.

Washes clean (with just soap and water) I have noticed less lashes falling off (especially because I had to remove most of it with vaseline – not just soap and water)

No giant clumps of crap coming out of the tube.

In case you’d like photo proof – here are some photos I yanked from my Instagram that show off just how radical my lashes are on this mascara.

4) This mascara also has conditioning properties to make your lashes heal from the inside out! But remarkably with the conditioning, the lashes are incredibly light and soft. In fact, I had a friend ask to feel my lashes – and I let her! She remarked how soft they were, and that’s how they feel. They don’t feel like you have anything on them. There was no doubt in my mind from the first day I used this that it deserved the 5 wheat stalks out of 5. It’s just that awesome. [ratings wheat=”5″]

I need this mascara because I was not born with long or thick lashes….and I love red apple..especially the mint to be gloss

Because I need something on my lips constantly because they tend to become dry if I don’t. My eyelashes are quite thin so I sure could use the Lash Project mascara.

Love RAL too! Would be so excited to try the mascara. I gave up on it years ago after too many issues.

  7. Kassie July 8, 2014 at 10:28 am Reply

I tried RAL after reading your book and I love the Mint to Be glosses, easier for me than lipstick although I have a few of those too. Now I’m looking for a good mascara that doesn’t leave dark circles under my eyes. I’m not a raccoon. : )

I’ve never been able to wear mascara due to reactions, so it would be nice to finally use more than an eyelash curler! RAL has the best lipsticks, and glosses.

I was just diagnosed YESTERDAY with Celiac’s Disease. I’m throwing out all my makeup to be safe. I’m scared….

    • Erica Dermer July 8, 2014 at 10:58 am Reply

First of all, welcome to the Celiac and the Beast family! It’s going to be an adjustment…I can tell you that, but after awhile it will just feel like second nature! Just read every label, make a lot of food at home at first until you feel confident enough in the diet to dine out. Check out my YouTube video about common mistakes – hopefully it helps! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEHKVP3o2pw

I’d love to win this one! I usually use waterproof mascara and it wont come off at night without taking a few eyelashes with it! It’s exciting that there is an all natural mascara that doesn’t have wheat protein in it!

I too am an RAL lover, and have been waiting a long time for their mascara to come to market. I’m a bit short on the cash side, so I’d love to win the mascara. Even if I don’t, I’ll end up buying it. Just thought I’d throw my lot in!

I haven’t worn make up very often because it irritates my skin/eyes. I too have become a RAL junkie & need the mascara because what’s the point in all the non-irritating RAL eyeshadow I have, if I just use a poison mascara? xoxo

  25. Jennifer C July 9, 2014 at 10:24 am Reply

I would love to win so I would have mascara I could actually wear. I have celiac disease, and I only use gluten-free makeup products, but I also have sensitive eyes so this mascara would be perfect! Of course, gluten-free lipstick would be great too.

I would love to try their new mascara! I want healthier lashes that are less likely to break and no smudging, especially on my wedding coming up in September. This product looks amazing! Love RAL.

I would like to win because my eyes have become so sensitive I can’t seem to find a mascara that doesn’t irritate them anymore.

  29. Lori Reed July 9, 2014 at 12:31 pm Reply

I rarely wear makeup on a daily basis anymore since I became a mom 6+ years ago. I LOVE makeup but I don’t have as much time and being in my early 30’s now, my skin has had some allergic reactions to makeup I had previously worn for years. Mascara is always the biggest culprit. No matter what brand I have tried in the past 5 years, they have all left my eyes, itchy, watery and sometimes horrible stinging pain. I trust the Red Apple brand, I have 3 of their lipsticks and they are honestly the best I have ever used! No more chapped lips or weird allergic reactions. I am trying to go GMO free so I just love that they have no soy or corn byproduct in their makeup. I don’t have Celiac’s but I am wanting to get tested for gluten sensitivity. I would just love my lashes to look healthy and full and not worry about what I am putting near my eyeball! 🙂

This thrills me. I used to have long voluptuous lashes and now they’re so thin and short :-(. Regular mascaras make it worse – they fall out. I can’t wait till feel pretty again.

I want to have big beautiful lashes! I haven’t worn any mascara since going gf because I am allergic to so much topical stuff that I am so scared to try anything. My ppor lashes look so lonely when I have the rest of my make up on. I look like I am lacking that finishing touch. Nobody wants to see that. Nobody!

  51. Michelle July 14, 2014 at 9:44 am Reply

I just found out about RAL! i need this mascara because for the last 7-8 years I’ve suffered from moderate dry eye syndrome. About 1.5 years ago I suddenly became sensitive to soy (ill feeling, heart palps, etc), gluten (asthma) and I also cut out dairy and have not added that back either. Around the same time I found out I had a basal cell carcinoma on my lower lid that required removal of a 1/3 of my lower lid and lashes, grafting and reconstruction to reform my eyelid. (My first surgery required my eye to be closed for 6 weeks in order for the graft to heal!) My last procedure was June 2014 and hopefully I am done! This type of cancer usually only effects older people and I’m in my 40’s!

Anyway, I’ve cleaned up my diet and am now working on body products and cosmetics as I feel that much of my dry eye and irritation is due to the cosmetics I’m using. I refuse to go on Restatis now and only as a last resort if my eyesight were in jeopardy. I would love to have beautiful lashes again, at least on the upper right lid as my surgeries have left me without lashes on 1/2 my lower lid.

Even if I don’t win, I would still like to try “clean” eye cosmetics to help my dry eye problems.
