Review: Tasty Bite Gluten Free Madras Lentils

Erica Dermer, October 21, 2012December 9, 2015

I love love love Tasty Bite Madras Lentils. They are gluten-free, kosher, and vegetarian. I’m not sure how I found out about Tasty Bite and these lentils (as I have no idea if I even had lentils before this). This is a super easy meal that we make ALL the time – Madras Lentils by Tasty Bite, ground turkey, potatoes, and zucchini.

The product itself is pretty awesome – it could be used as an entree or as a side dish and comes in these great pouches that are easy to make in the microwave. Just tear it open, pop it in, and it comes out ready to eat!

INGREDIENTS
Water, Tomatoes, Lentils, Red Beans, Onions, Cream, Salt, Butter, Sunflower Oil, Chilies, Cumin. Contains: Milk.

Unfortunately, because they make products with wheat and barley, they display this warning: This product has been processed in a facility that also processes nuts, wheat, dairy and soy. I always like to give a head’s up for anything that isn’t made in a gluten-free facility. I haven’t had any reactions to this since I eat this all the time, but I’m more than willing to accept any feedback from those who are my barometers for gluten (aka those that get symptoms right away).

Anyways, here’s how we make it. It’s super easy, since all you have to do is microwave it for 1.5 minutes!

1) Easy way: Just put it on some brown rice – and you’re done! Want to add more protein? Add in some seasoned ground turkey (just add pepper and garlic and onions while you’re sautéing the turkey).

2) The advanced way. Cut up some zucchini and potatoes (I like baby potatoes that are more buttery) and then bake them with some olive oil and fresh garlic). While those are roasting, I saute the turkey with garlic and pepper and add it to the Madras Lentils OR keep it separate (we mix it up). It’s a great meal and fills us up on tasty healthy food.

So if these were made in a completely gluten-free facility, they would earn 5 stars. If you don’t trust my rating system – trust my receipts! I buy them in bulk at our Costco. They’re quick and easy and tasty. So, i’ll give them a 4.5. I can’t wait for you to try it out and make your own lentils creation!

I know this is an old article but… today my celiac daughter ate this and got a stomachache. I was not sure I should give it to her … cause just yesterday I learned that lentils are often contaminated AND also spices can be heavily contaminated with gluten.

I just tried this for the first time and wow I was in bed for hours with Celiac cramps. Bringing them all back to store tomorrow. Not suitable for Celiacs.

I had a reaction to it today after not eating it for a long time. I believed it was safe, but this was the only thing I ate that could have caused my reaction. I’m so frustrated because this was a staple for quick and easy lunch previously.
