Both of our cats are grain-free and gluten-free. No gluten is allowed in the house unless they are small treats and we try not to even buy those. On top of being free from, our cats are also pretty picky. #TerribleMurph will eat the most random of foods, including licking butter, stealing egg rolls, and even inedible foods like iPhone chargers. Mushu is very picky, and just recently we found out that she has projectile vomiting with beef – so that’s…ahem, interesting.

Choosing cat food is insanely difficult, especially on a specialty diet. Luckily, the explosion of grain-free food on the market, even in the past three years, has made it easier to have more options. But now, it seems like there’s even more than an aisle full of selections. How do you choose?

Purina’s new Muse® Natural Cat Food is exclusively available at PetSmart – and luckily I have one right around the corner from us. It was pretty easy to find once you walk into a store. Search for the giant CAT banner, and follow the aisles to where you see the grain-free, more high-end cat food. The area will be full of Muse branding (see images for details).

When you see Muse at PetSmart, you’ll see that there’s a lot of varieties. There are over 30 recipes and over 24 grain-free varieties in Chowder, Broth, With Toppers, In Gravy, and Pate. Your cat will never get sick of just one texture – and they’ll think that they’re eating human food right off your plate! Please take note that there are 24 grain-free varieties, those not marked grain-free CONTAIN WHEAT GLUTEN. If you have a wheat allergy or are gluten-free, do not purchase those.

So Did They Eat It?
They loved it! The only one that didn’t get finished was the Natural Mackerel In Broth with Shrimp Topper. The cats seemed to love the mackerel, but Murphy left the shrimp (seriously a whole shrimp), and looked kind of scared of it. Maybe he had never seen a real shrimp before? But a big plus, no vomit! Here’s a few pics of the fur kids chowing down! You may know #TerribleMurph but even Mushu liked the yummies! She’s usually too shy for photos, but not when she’s eating!

We slowly made our way through the rest of the collection and boy did they take the clean plate guarantee to heart. Even the chicken pate was finished – and our cats aren’t huge on chicken (well, chicken that isn’t on a human’s plate ready to be eaten – they love to stick their paws on that).

I’d say that I was most impressed with the Muse that are “in chowder,” “in broth,” and “with toppers.” These are the larger packages that don’t look like the traditional cat food tin. When you open it up, the smell of seafood hits your nose and I swear you can’t tell the difference between this and opening up a can of people-grade seafood. It looked the most like people food – so of course our cats were most likely to eat it. Probably because they thought they were being naughty. They really liked licking up the chowder and broth – giving them extra incentive to finish their bowl and lick it clean (free dishwasher!). Each “with topper” product has a fun topper – a shrimp, a baby clam, or a bonito. I’d have to say it’s a pretty unique flavor and treat for the cats to get real seafood like that!
