Today we’re talking about moms. Mother’s Day is coming up on May 13th. But I’m not a mom – of humans that is. I have two cats. You might be familiar with them if you’re a fan of @TerribleMurph on Instagram. I’ve been a cat mom with these two for over 7 years. While I met them when they were older, and they had another mom before me, I feel like I’ve had them since they were kittens. Although, let’s be honest, I’ve had many “you’re not my real mom” tantrums from these two over the years.

There are many #CatMomTruth stories that I have. For example. I totally thought I was a dog person. My first pet was a cat, but then we only had dogs – greyhounds and basenjis. I’m like “dogs are the best! who needs cats?!?!” But then when I met non-GFBF, he came along with two cats. And another truth, they didn’t like me the first few years. That’s how Terrible Murph got his name! He’d eat everything I owned, including leather purses and Macbook cords. It took years for them to trust me and treat me like their friend. Although I honestly think they think I’m just their bigger, dumber, sister.

The truth is that I was born to be a cat lady. My elderly neighbor next to us is obsessed with our cats. It turns out that she’s had a number of cats throughout her long life, but is no longer mobile enough to care for them. Murph loves her, but I think it’s only because her place is filled with weird smells from the 1960’s on. But the way that she talks to our cats, on her way to and from the mailbox outside our door, is the way that I talk to all cats, including our neighborhood strays. I name all of the strays in our cat colony and feed them all high-end grain-free food, because they can’t just eat baby birds and grass 24/7 – right? I talk to them, and ask them to be my friends. Then again, I also asked the neighborhood raccoon that, so maybe I’m just lonely.

Especially with Murph’s recent health issues, I’ve learned just how much these furry children mean to me. I’ve never cried like I’ve cried as I did while watching Murphy have seizures. But pets die. It’s a circle of life, and we’ve seen a lot of loss with pets. But every moment that we get to share with your pets make our lives better – even if they poop on our rugs or barf in our shoes. The truth is that these are my children. Believe me, I would wear them in a BabyBjorn if I could.

When we moved in together, we made a commitment to have a gluten-free household, including cat food and cat treats. While we can’t avoid having gluten in the house with Murph’s current medication, we try to keep it all celiac-safe, even for the cats.

Supreme Source Grain-Free Cat Food

Supreme Source, today’s sponsor and sponsor of #CatMomTruth,  is grain-free, with no corn, wheat, soy, or artificial colors or flavors. It’s made in America from a family-owned company. It’s available nationwide in grocery stores or on Chewy.com.

Murphy and Mushu both loved trying Supreme Source, but – as you might know from previous cat posts – Mushu refuses to have her photo taken for the blog. She’s a little diva, but we still love her. It’s free from beef, so Mushu can eat it (she projectile vomits if she has any beef), and it’s fish flavored so both cats love it.

Oooo I think my dog would love their dog food – especially the sweet potato and salmon flavor. She’d go nuts! Going to have to try this out for her since we’re switching her from puppy to adult food soon anyways. Good time to introduce new food.
